The production of eco-friendly yarn typically begins with the sourcing of raw materials, with a core focus on renewability or recyclability. Common sources include recycled plastic bottles, textile waste, cotton spinning scraps, and natural, sustainable crop fibers. Taking recycled polyester as an example, collected PET bottles are first sorted, cleaned, and stripped of labels and impurities; they are then shredded into clean flakes or chips to prepare for the subsequent spinning process.
In the spinning stage, the processed raw materials are melted or dissolved and then extruded at high temperatures to form fine filaments. For recycled chemical fibers, melt spinning is commonly used: the molten polymer is extruded through a spinneret into continuous filaments, which are then cooled, drawn, and heat-set to ensure the fiber possesses the necessary strength and stability. Natural eco-friendly yarns, such as organic cotton, undergo traditional spinning processes-including opening, carding, drawing, and fine spinning-but with reduced chemical treatment during the cultivation and processing stages.
Depending on the intended application, the yarn may undergo twisting, dyeing, or functional finishing treatments, such as antimicrobial, moisture-wicking, or softening processes. To maintain eco-friendly standards, dyeing often employs low-pollution dyes or water-saving techniques. The finished eco-friendly yarn undergoes quality testing-evaluating metrics such as strength, uniformity, and colorfastness-and is approved for use in weaving or knitting only after meeting the required standards.
